Ice dance and pair skating are both performed by two skaters in figure skating, but they are judged as separate disciplines. Ice dance builds its program around prescribed dance steps and the way partners interpret the music. Pair skating places greater emphasis on technical skating skills, including lifts, throws, jumps and spins. In pair skating, one partner often takes the base position for lifts and throws while the other performs the corresponding elements. In ice dance, the program is structured around the music and prescribed dance patterns. The selection and composition of elements form the main difference between the two events. Both disciplines remain part of competitive figure skating.
