Anak Krakatau, in the Sunda Strait, has been erupting continuously since the night of September 5, with activity starting at 23:07 Western Indonesia Time and still running past 04:40. The Geology Agency in Bandung says the detonations were loud enough to be heard across three provinces. It has stepped in to explain the prolonged eruption to residents rattled by the noise.
