Croatian authorities say police have stopped 25,000 migrants attempting illegal crossings. The same enforcement effort has apprehended 950 people described as smugglers. Interior Minister Božinović cited those results while calling Croatia one of the safest countries in the European Union. Officers monitor 1,350 kilometers of Croatia's Schengen border and European Union external frontier around the clock. On the section directly exposed to illegal crossings, the number of migrants has fallen by about 40 percent this year. The government is using the lower crossing rate and enforcement results to promote its security record.
