Full story

The James Webb Space Telescope has produced observations that do not fit neatly with standard descriptions in reference books. Under basic physics, massive celestial bodies are expected to become roughly spherical because gravity pulls their material toward a shared center. Some planets, however, do not behave with such discipline. Their forms depart from the rounded pattern that the simplest physical rule would suggest. Webb's results complicate a textbook expectation about large planets. The report did not name the worlds or say whether their unusual shapes were measured directly or inferred from other data.
