The Chilean Senate committee gave general approval to a bill that would speed the use of genetic profiles in criminal investigations. The proposal is in its second constitutional stage, meaning it still has to complete the legislative process before becoming law. It would create a National DNA Records System to organize profiles and make comparisons easier. Laboratories operated by Carabineros, the investigative police unit PDI and the SML medical service would be able to run comparisons and send results directly to prosecutors or courts. The goal is to shorten delays when investigators check whether DNA recovered from a scene matches an existing record. Committee approval was general rather than final, and the measure still faces further debate and votes.
