Geraldine and Willie Hawkes were identified as the elderly couple who died in a fire at a house near Innishannon in County Cork. The blaze destroyed part of the property, and the roof collapsed while emergency crews were working at the scene. The collapse complicated search operations and made access to the house more difficult. Fire and police personnel were involved in examining the property and establishing how the fire began. No cause had been publicly identified at the time of the report, and investigators had not said whether the couple’s age affected their ability to escape. Authorities had also not indicated whether anyone else was injured.
