A newly released book revisits a strange chapter of colonial history: Moroccan Muslims making the pilgrimage to Mecca under the eye of General Franco's Spain. It focuses on the Spanish Civil War period, when the regime leaned on religious and propaganda channels to bind Morocco to its cause. The book treats those years as a decisive stretch of shared Moroccan-Spanish history. In its telling, the Hajj stopped being only a matter of faith and became a message from the occupier.
