NewsMaker journalists tested an online quiz that uses speech to estimate where a Romanian speaker grew up. The test, called "De unde ești după vorbă," asks 25 questions and draws on data from a Romanian linguistic atlas. Its premise is that words and habits picked up at home can leave traces of a person's regional background. A word such as "harbuz" can therefore act as a clue rather than merely a piece of everyday vocabulary. Both Romanian-speaking reporters and Russian-speaking NewsMaker staff took the quiz. Their experience allowed the publication to examine how the test treats people with different mother tongues and levels of familiarity with Romanian. The experiment was intended to show what regional identity can be inferred from ordinary conversation.
