Greek MEP Yannis Maniatis has called for an immediate and firm European response to Libya’s ratification of a controversial Turkey-Libya memorandum. He made the appeal during a European Parliament debate on Nicola Zingaretti’s report concerning the Agreement for the Mediterranean. Maniatis described the memorandum as illegal and said the parliamentary vote should not go unchallenged. The vice-president of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, he represents Greece’s PASOK party. His intervention linked the maritime agreement to the EU’s wider role in Mediterranean affairs. Maniatis did not specify what legal or diplomatic measures he proposed, and no sanctions or EU timetable was announced.
