Richard Baca Palacios, the mayor of Morropón, called for heavy machinery and humanitarian aid as severe rain battered Peru's Piura region. Speaking on La Rotativa del Aire, he said the area was already suffering from the effects of what he called a megafenomenon associated with El Niño. Palacios said emergency conditions were affecting communities across Piura. He asked authorities for machinery to help mitigate the damage and clear access where needed. The mayor also requested humanitarian assistance for people whose homes, livelihoods and safety had been put at risk. His intervention seeks a combined response of equipment, rescue and relief as the regional situation is assessed.
