HYPREP awards postgraduate scholarships to 500 Ogoni graduates
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, known as HYPREP, has granted postgraduate scholarships to 500 graduates from Ogoniland in Rivers State. The scheme sits under the implementation of the UNEP report, which documented extensive oil contamination across Ogoni communities years ago. Beneficiaries will pick up advanced degrees with support they could rarely have funded on their own. HYPREP has pursued several human-capacity programmes alongside its physical cleanup of polluted sites, including skills training and livelihood support. Officials see the scholarship wave as a way to build a pool of local experts who can carry the remediation and recovery effort forward. Community leaders have welcomed the awards while pressing for transparency in how beneficiaries were selected. Attention now turns to whether the wider cleanup programme keeps pace with these education investments.
