Limited access to finance is holding back nature-based solutions in Ghana and across Africa, according to Consolidated Bank Ghana. The bank's Head of Sustainable Financing and Impact, Eva Ackuaku, laid out the problem at Africa Climate Dialogue 2026. She said projects such as reforestation and ecosystem restoration struggle to win ordinary bank loans because their commercial returns look thin or hard to measure. Environmental and social benefits are real, she argued, but lenders have trouble pricing them into a loan decision. Her remedy was more support from donors and development partners, paired with policies that make these investments easier to justify on paper. She also pressed banks to collaborate rather than treat green financing as each institution's separate problem. Without that mix of money and favourable rules, she warned, promising projects will keep stalling at the financing stage.

Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) has identified limited access to finance, grants and donor support as major barriers to scaling up nature-based solutions in Ghana and across Africa. The bank’s Head of Sustainable Financing and Impact Department, Mrs Eva Ackuaku, says although such projects can deliver environmental and social benefits, concerns about their commercial viability often make it difficult for them to secure conventional bank financing. Speaking at the Africa Climate Dialogue 2026, she called for increased financial support, an enabling policy environment and stronger collaboration among financial institutions and development partners to unlock investment in nature-based solutions.
