Brand in einstigem Nazi-Berghaus am Obersalzberg
Fire has broken out at the Kehlsteinhaus, the Nazi-era mountain house towering above Berchtesgaden. The building sits at 1,834 metres on the Obersalzberg, within ground that was once declared the so-called Führer restricted zone. These days the house operates as a tavern on the summit, drawing tourists up the mountain road. Initial findings suggest nobody was inside what is now a guesthouse when the flames began. Firefighting operations are under way, and the scale of the damage is still being assessed. The structure went up in the late 1930s as a commission from within Hitler's own circle and emerged from the war almost untouched. Determining what sparked the blaze will come next once crews can work the site safely.
