Charles Leclerc posted the fastest time in free practice for the United States Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli followed in second, giving Mercedes a strong opening day at the track. Antonelli will now chase the best possible position in qualifying as part of his push toward the 2026 crown. Practice times deserve caution, since teams rarely show their full hand so early in a weekend. Even so, Leclerc's pace at the top points to a comfortable balance in the Ferrari around this circuit. Antonelli needs to convert that Friday speed into a qualifying result that keeps him on course for the title he has his eye on. Both drivers leave the session with solid data on tyre wear and race rhythm to work from.
