65 harmful apps, 24 wrongly age-rated found in Singapore review of over 7,000 apps
Singapore's review of app stores has put hard numbers on a problem regulators have long suspected. Authorities examined more than 7,000 apps and flagged 65 as harmful, while another 24 carried age ratings that did not match what they actually contained. Sexual content and violent material turned out to be the most prevalent findings, along with apps facilitating vice and organized crime. The wrongly rated apps raise separate concerns, since children could reach them through ordinary searches. Millions of downloads flow through app stores in the country, so even a small number of harmful listings can reach wide audiences. Officials have shared the findings with the platforms that host these apps. The exercise is meant to push store operators to clean up listings and tighten age verification before problems reach young users.
Sexual content, violent content and content facilitating vice and organised crime were the most prevalent types of harmful and inappropriate content found.
