David Toscana has written a novel based on an event from one thousand years ago. The story explores a period when the Byzantine Empire defeated Bulgaria and blinded its soldiers. Little is known about the actual event beyond these facts. The author is presenting the book, which won the Alfaguara Prize, in Costa Rica.
