Global forecasts indicate that a powerful El Niño phenomenon could bring extreme and opposing weather patterns across the planet. Eastern Africa, parts of North America, and western South America can expect wetter weather and destructive rainfall. Simultaneously, there is a high risk of extreme droughts and drinking water shortages. These conditions threaten agricultural collapse in southern Africa and southeast Asia. Central America, the Caribbean, and the Amazon basin are also at risk. The Amazon basin covers about 40 percent of South America. The UN warns that roughly 50 million people could face hunger, making the next two weeks critical.
