The remains of Nelson's Pillar, once the tallest Doric column in the world, have ended up far from the O'Connell Street site where the monument stood. Its surviving stones are now arranged in a circle inside walled gardens in Kilkenny. A chance encounter with them reveals a strange afterlife for the old Dublin landmark.
