Providing protection, food and medical care to enemy combatants is difficult in any nation. Ukrainian personnel who work with Russian war prisoners face an additional burden because the invaders entered their country and committed atrocities. They are aware that the Russians caused suffering on their soil. At the same time, their own authorities want to demonstrate to the international community that prisoners are treated with respect. The New York Times reports that the staff involved pursue the work for a variety of personal motivations. Some see it as a moral duty, while others view it as a way to gain professional experience. The article notes that the attitudes of camp workers toward the prisoners can differ from the official stance.
