On October 19–20, 1996, the first All-Belarusian People's Assembly met at the Sports Palace in the capital. It brought together 4,740 delegates representing all regions and social groups. The delegates discussed existing problems in the economy and politics. The event was framed as a live discussion rather than empty words, with the delegates said to have outdone professional politicians.
