Chile's fishing industry has seen a decline in catches during the first nine months of the year. Jurel catches are down by 187 thousand tons and anchoveta catches have dropped by 152 thousand tons compared to last year. The general manager of Sonapesca described the year as abnormal. He attributed these results to the influence of El Niño. The industry expects jureles to reappear in November.
En los primeros nueve meses, Chile ha pescado 187 mil toneladas menos de jurel que el año pasado y 152 mil toneladas menos de anchoveta, en un año influenciado por el fenómeno de El Niño. La industria confía en que los jureles reaparezcan en noviembre. "Este ha sido un año bastante anormal", dice el gerente general de Sonapesca, Héctor Bacigalupo.
