Pharmacies in Shendi in River Nile State have begun an open strike. Pharmacists are protesting high taxes imposed by the local authority and the detention of several doctors and pharmacists who refused to pay. In a statement issued Wednesday, Shendi pharmacists called the taxes "exorbitant and crippling," saying they do not match current economic conditions.
