Full story
A hydrothermal explosion reshaped the Biscuit basin in Yellowstone in 1925. The USGS used maps from 1926 to reconstruct the events. They discovered a sign for the Black Pearl was placed incorrectly. This error led people 1,000 feet away from the actual geyser. Visitors eventually found the sign in a spot where no geyser existed. This discovery helped reveal the mystery of the area.
