New invasive ant species detected in Israel for the first time in Haifa
The Environmental Protection Ministry found the African big-headed ant in the Neve Sha’anan neighborhood of Haifa. This species is ranked among the 100 most harmful invasive species globally. Officials are investigating other reports of the ant within the city. The ministry is collaborating with the Haifa Municipality, Tel Aviv University, and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority. They aim to increase monitoring and find pest-control methods that work in Israeli conditions. The public should report sightings to help map hotspots and stop the species from spreading.
