Researchers have for the first time measured the scale of a spectacular gathering of eels in the deep sea. Millions of the animals have been found massing around an underwater volcano off the coast of Tasmania. Scientists still do not know why the eels pick exactly this spot to meet. The observation finally puts a number on how large these deep-sea gatherings can be. Work is continuing to figure out what draws so many eels to the volcano.
