JP-7, the fuel known as JP‑7, made possible the development of the world’s fastest manned jet, the SR‑71 Blackbird. The fuel had to endure the extreme heat and friction generated at speeds around Mach 3. Its thermal stability was such that a match could be extinguished when placed in it. Engineers therefore had to devise a special method to ignite the engine.
