Muhabi Lungu, the Secretary General of the Tonse/Pamodzi Alliance, claimed that threats influenced a candidate's decision to withdraw. Daniel Chisenga had been the candidate for the Mandevu Parliamentary by-election. Lungu stated that a senior leader was among those who threatened Chisenga. These alleged threats partly necessitated the withdrawal from the race.
