Full story
Edible chestnuts have a long history in Romania, particularly in the old forests of Oltenia and Maramureș. During the middle of the 20th century, canning factories processed tens of tons of these fruits into puree. Native chestnuts are now becoming harder to find in local markets. Consequently, Romania imports nine times more of the fruit than it produces.
