Russia used its veto on Friday against a US draft resolution at the UN Security Council that aimed to amend and reduce the mandate of the UN mission in the Moroccan Sahara. The move raised serious questions about the future of relations between Moscow and Rabat. It also raised the question of whether the unprecedented Russian step was merely diplomatic sparring with Washington in a global struggle for influence or signaled something beyond that.
