Secretary General António Guterres released a statement following the end of a 35-year peace mission. He referred to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara. Guterres stated that the end of this mission does not cancel the people's right to self-determination. The United Nations maintains its commitment to a peaceful solution.
