St Mary's Church in Burton Bradstock has installed a two-storey soft play area inside its own building, and the choice has infuriated some of its parishioners. The church spent £20,000 on the equipment, a considerable sum for a village parish. The play structure has been set up in the nave, standing alongside the rows of pews where congregants normally worship. That placement is precisely what has angered objectors, who object to children's play gear taking over the space of their church. Rather than putting the equipment in a separate hall or annex, the church chose the main worship area itself. The result is an unusual mix of pews and padded climbing frames under one roof, and a village argument over whether faith and soft play belong together.
