The Subsecretariat of Tourism and the National Tourism Service confirmed that the river descent on the Maipo River was organized privately and was not part of a contracted service with any rafting company. Officials stated that the participants entered the river from a sector that is not authorised for rafting activities. During the descent the boat overturned, causing a fatal accident. The crash resulted in the deaths of three women. Four additional people were taken to hospital, where their conditions were reported as not life‑threatening. Authorities are investigating the incident in light of the unpermitted use of the river stretch.
