In 1984, the 80,000-ton aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk collided with a Russian nuclear submarine. The submarine was traveling at 15 knots at the time of the impact. Parts of the submarine remained attached to the carrier's hull. This event occurred during a joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea. It happened during a period of high tension in the Cold War. Both vessels suffered damage. The collision allowed the United States to obtain pieces of Soviet naval technology.
