Nearly 12,000 books have been censored in United States schools. Stephen King is the author most affected by these bans. Fiction accounts for 87% of the banned books, while 58% are young adult literature. PEN America reports that bans often target works about race, racism, sexual diversity, and sex. Texas and Florida have the highest number of registered cases.
