Censorship caught up with plenty of famous books during the twentieth century, and not only under authoritarian regimes. Some of the titles surprised readers by ending up on banned lists at all. The bans came, oddly enough, from countries that counted themselves democracies. Most works offended on moral grounds, while others drew fire for the political systems they described.
