Spartans and Argives arranged for their regular armies to pull back from the battlefield. Each side then assembled a unit of three hundred elite warriors. These two elite groups confronted each other directly. The clash was fought with equal numbers on both sides. The fighting caused the deaths of five percent of the male citizens of both Sparta and Argos. The encounter is recorded as a battle of 300 versus 300.
