A pledge by La France Insoumise leaders to lift the abaya ban in schools if they take power has ignited a fresh political fight in France. Marine Le Pen, Gabriel Attal and Edouard Philippe have all waded in with sharp criticism of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his party. The row took off after comments from Mathilde Panot, who leads the party's group in the National Assembly. Secularism and identity have now been pushed back to the front of the French election debate.
