Extreme heat across Europe during the summer of 2026 is suspected of causing 50,391 premature deaths. These fatalities occurred across 854 cities. Two studies published in the scientific journal Nature Health indicate this was the deadliest summer for high temperatures in the studied period. Roughly two-thirds of the victims were affected by these conditions.
