Iran says two supertankers ran into sea mines while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The explosions reportedly knocked out the engines on both vessels and left them drifting without power. Fires broke out on board after the blasts, and the crews were forced to abandon their ships. Together, the two tankers were carrying around 4.5 million barrels of crude oil. Iran did not name those behind the mines in its account of the incident. The strait is one of the busiest routes for oil shipments in the world. Any disruption there quickly draws attention from shipping companies and energy markets.
