A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has killed 16 people and injured 65 others in China, according to agency reports cited from Beijing, Lhasa, Taipei and Quetta. Destruction spread through the affected area after the main tremor struck. Monitors recorded 413 aftershocks in the period that followed. The repeated shaking has raised fresh dangers for buildings and other structures already under strain in the hit zone. Rescue and relief work continued as agencies kept updating the casualty toll. In a second blow for the region, the strongest storm of the year, Champi, slammed into Taiwan. Weather officials were tracking the storm's progress while quake relief was still under way.
