During a war period in the United States, fake news was spread through a method of debunking falsehoods. After Pearl Harbor, rumors flooded the country about wounded soldiers paying for transfusions and thousands of paratroopers jumping in Florida. Some reports claimed 15,000 soldiers suffered brain freeze. These rumors were attributed to Berlin. Clinics were established to fight these myths, but the process of debunking them actually helped the stories circulate more widely.
