Surveyors urged to go digital: Minister Chipungu tells profession to embrace technology as it shapes Malawi’s future

Land Minister Chimwemwe Chipungu has called on Malawi's surveyors to take up new technology and hold their professional standards high. He gave the message in Salima while opening the Surveyors Institute of Malawi's 2026 Annual Continuing Professional Development conference. His argument was that the country is changing how land is managed, and a profession built on paper maps and field books cannot afford to stand still. Digital tools for measuring and record keeping are reshaping how parcels get surveyed and registered. Chipungu tied the message to the government's wider effort to modernise land administration, an area long weighed down by informal boundaries and incomplete records. He asked the institute to keep its members trained as the tools change. The conference programme is built around sessions meant to keep licensed surveyors current on those changes. In a country where land disputes fill the courts, the quality of survey work reaches well beyond the profession itself.

Rotary Club rallies Malawians to donate blood for children battling cancer — as charity reveals scale of crisis facing young patients A Lilongwe charity has launched an urgent blood donation drive to support children undergoing cancer treatment, as Malawi marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September — with organisers revealing hundreds of children are diagnosed with the disease in the country every single year. The Rotary Club of Lilongwe City Centre organised the initiative to back young patients being treated at the National Cancer Centre, where blood transfusions form a critical part of care for children fighting the disease. President-elect of the club, Atupele Mpasa, said the drive was designed both to directly support children in treatment and to encourage ordinary Malawians to step forward as donors. “As we know, transfusions are a big part of cancer care, and therefore we thought that we can contribute by mobilising blood donors,” she said. In a stark illustration of the scale of the problem, Mpasa revealed that the National Cancer Centre diagnoses at least 250 children with cancer every year — a figure she warned could be even higher in reality, given that some cases in Malawi go undiagnosed altogether. She said the blood drive was intended to complement the work of health authorities in ensuring young patients have reliable access to blood whenever they need it during treatment. The initiative comes as the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) continues to warn that demand for blood among children with cancer remains persistently high, with current supplies falling short of what is needed to meet demand. Bridget Shumba, from MBTS’s Public Relations Office, welcomed the Rotary Club’s efforts, but issued a wider call to action, urging more Malawians to become regular blood donors to help prevent patients losing their lives simply because supplies have run dry. Childhood cancer remains a significant, if often overlooked, public health challenge in Malawi, where late diagnosis and limited resources can make treatment far more difficult than in countries with more developed healthcare systems. The National Cancer Centre serves as the country’s primary facility for treating young cancer patients, many of whom rely on regular transfusions to survive chemotherapy and other gruelling treatment regimes. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, observed globally each September, is aimed at raising awareness of early warning signs and improving survival rates for children diagnosed with the disease.

A Lilongwe charity has thrown its weight behind children receiving cancer treatment with an urgent call for blood donations across Malawi. The Rotary Club of Lilongwe City Centre organised the drive to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which runs through September. Club president-elect Atupele Mpasa said transfusions form a big part of cancer care, and the club wanted to mobilise donors to support young patients at the National Cancer Centre. She revealed that the facility diagnoses at least 250 children with cancer every year, a count that likely underestimates the real total because some cases in the country go undetected. The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service continues to warn that demand for blood among children with the disease outstrips what is currently available. Bridget Shumba of the service's public relations office welcomed the club's intervention and pressed more Malawians to become regular donors so that patients do not die because supplies run out. Childhood cancer often goes unnoticed in Malawi, where late diagnosis and thin resources make treatment harder than in countries with better-equipped health systems. September's global campaign aims to teach families the early warning signs of the disease and lift survival rates.

LUANAR project aims to boost Malawi’s maize seed supply

Malawi's government is backing a winter maize seed project at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, known as LUANAR. The goal is to ease the shortages in seed availability, affordability and accessibility under this year's Farm Input Subsidy Programme. Beneficiaries of FISP have struggled to get certified seed when and where they need it, which is the problem the project wants to solve. The work runs through LUANAR's Mega Farm Initiative. That farm sits at Dwangwa in Nkhotakota district, where maize is grown during the off-season. Winter production requires irrigation, which lets the university multiply seed while most rain-fed fields sit idle. Success would mean more certified seed flowing into the subsidy programme before the next planting season. The project also puts the university's farms at the center of a national supply fix.
