Cambodian police have told motorbike riders to raise their guard on the roads during the Pchum Ben festival. The warning came from Lt. Gen. Chev Hak, deputy commissioner general of the National Police. He pointed out that most of the country's road deaths involve people riding motorbikes. The festival sends huge numbers of families back to their home provinces, which pushes traffic onto major highways at the same time. Riders were urged to exercise maximum caution, obey traffic rules and avoid risky manoeuvres through the holiday rush. Police typically reinforce patrols and checkpoints along main routes during the celebration to catch speeding and drunk drivers. Holiday periods have repeatedly produced grim accident statistics in Cambodia, and officials are trying hard to break that pattern.
