Singapore recorded moderate air quality on Thursday (Sept 24) as rain fell over the northern parts in the afternoon.At 6pm, 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) ranged between 62 and 76 — in the moderate range — with central Singapore recording the highest reading of 76.Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 is in the normal band across all five regions.In its daily haze situation update on Thursday evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the country's 24-hour PSI forecast is again expected to be in the moderate to low-unhealthy range.It pointed out that there is a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore due to the prevailing east-southeast, south-easterly winds, which could bring moderate to dense smoke plumes observed from fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra to Singapore.Data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre's daily hotspot count shows a sharp spike in number of hotspots recorded in Kalimantan — rising from the 304 recorded on Sept 22, to 792 on Sept 23.

Air quality again remained in the moderate range on Wednesday (Sept 23) as rain fell across some parts of Singapore.At 7pm, the 24-hour Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) ranged between 58 to 67 — in the moderate range — with western Singapore recording the highest reading of 67.Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 is in the normal band for all regions, except in western Singapore, which had a concentration reading on 58 — in the elevated band.In its daily haze situation update on Wednesday evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the 24-hour PSI forecast for Singapore is expected to be in the moderate to low-unhealthy range.It noted that dry conditions have persisted over southern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan, with moderate to dense smoke plumes observed from fires in those areas.Data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre show that the number of hotspots in Kalimantan rose to 304 on Sept 22, up from the 198 a day earlier.NEA said that while dry conditions are forecast over south-eastern Sumatra and other parts of Kalimantan on Thursday, showers are expected over Singapore and parts of its surround region.

A 33-year-old man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs after a two-vehicle accident in Ang Mo Kio in the early hours of Tuesday (Sept 22) morning.The incident, involving a taxi and a car, happened at about 1.45am along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 towards Buangkok Green.A photograph of the aftermath on social media shows the car stopped across two lanes on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5.Debris could be seen around the black car and its airbags are activated.Meanwhile, the male driver is seen sitting by the roadside.Police told AsiaOne that driver was attended to by Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedics but refused to be taken to hospital.No other injuries were reported in the incident.A vaporiser and a pod found in his possession were seized and referred to the Health Sciences Authority.The police added that he was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.Police investigations are ongoing. The offence of driving under the influence of drugs carries a penalty of up to 12 months' imprisonment, a fine of up to $10,000 or both.

A firefighter and two people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at a HDB unit in Ang Mo Kio.The incident occurred at Blk 254 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on Tuesday (Sept 22) at around 10.45am, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).Footage circulating online showed shattered windows of the affected unit while bright orange flames engulfed the unit. Thick black smoke also billowed out from the windows.The fire involved items in the living room of the affected unit, which was located on the seventh floor.SCDF managed to extinguish the fire with a water jet during operations and found two people in the bedrooms.The two people were assessed for smoke inhalation after being rescued from the unit and were subsequently taken to Singapore General Hospital.Additionally, one firefighter was assessed for heat exhaustion after the firefighting operation and was taken to Woodlands Hospital as a precaution.About 20 residents from the block were also evacuated by the police and SCDF.The cause of the fire is under investigation, said the SCDF.

National Cancer Centre 'deeply sorry' after email error exposes details of more than 460 patients
The National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) has apologised after error with an invitation caused recipients' emails to be visible to one another, according to a statement by the centre on Saturday (Sept 19).The email sent out on Friday evening, comprised an invitation to 467 people to an event organised by the centre.Instead of using the blind carbon copy option that hides the email addresses of recipients from each other, NCCS used the regular carbon copy option.If a patient used their work email, anyone who received the message could see where they worked.NCCS chief operating officer Chong Pang Boon explained that it was an "administrative error" for their invitation to their Living with Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) event.The event is open to people living with HBOC syndrome and their loved ones, he added."Apart from email addresses, no NRIC numbers, phone numbers or other personal data were revealed," Chong, who is also the NCCS data protection officer, assured."We apologise for any anxiety this may have caused, and we are deeply sorry for the error.

A total of 82 suspected drug offenders were arrested in a five-day islandwide anti-drug operation conducted by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) from Sept 14 to 18.Controlled drugs seized during the operation included about 1,151g of cannabis, 146g of Ice, 45g of heroin, 9g of ketamine, four Ecstasy tablets and two lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) stamps.The drugs seized are estimated to be worth more than $46,700, CNB said in a press release on Sept 18. The heroin, Ice and cannabis seized could potentially feed the addiction of 270 abusers for a week, according to the bureau.Areas covered during the operation included Ang Mo Kio, Macpherson, Geylang and Lavender.Three foreign nationals arrested in GeylangOn the evening of Sept 15, CNB officers arrested a 40-year-old male foreign national near Lorong 12 Geylang for suspected drug trafficking offences.Follow-up investigations led officers to a hotel along Sims Avenue, where a 43-year-old male foreign national and a 34-year-old female foreign national were arrested for suspected drug offences.
