A 19-year-old male teenager has been arrested for his alleged involvement in several cases of loanshark harassment.Police said in a news release on Thursday (Oct 1) night that they were alerted at about 11.40pm on Sept 30 to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Tampines Street 11.A photograph of the alleged crime scene shows the main gate of the victim's unit splashed with red paint. A debtor's note was also placed on the ground.Officers from Bedok Police Division and the Police Operations Command Centre identified the teenager through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and police cameras.According to the police, he was arrested within three hours of the report being lodged.Preliminary investigations revealed that he is allegedly involved in at least two other similar cases of loanshark harassment, the police added.The 19-year-old will be charged in court on Friday with the offence of loanshark harassment.

Singapore, Germany agree to expand defence ties during Chan Chun Sing's Berlin visit
The defence ministers of Singapore and Germany have agreed to deepen defence cooperation in areas of mutual interest, the city state's Ministry of Defence said on Thursday (Oct 1).Chan Chun Sing, who is also Singapore's Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister-in-charge of the Public Service, and German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius reaffirmed the two countries' strong and substantive bilateral defence relations and exchanged views on recent geopolitical developments.In a news release on Thursday evening, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said the two ministers agreed to expand cooperation in areas including cybersecurity, countering hybrid threats, the defence industry, supply chain resilience and upholding international law.The Singaporean defence minister also welcomed Germany's interest in joining the Guiding Principles for Underwater Infrastructure Defence Exchanges (GUIDE). Launched at the Shangri-La Dialogue in May 2026, GUIDE brings together countries with shared interests in safeguarding critical underwater infrastructure.

28-year-old motorcyclist dies after crash with lorry on PIE
A 28-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision involving a lorry on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) on Oct 1.The accident resulted in a major traffic jam along PIE under the Chantek flyover, according to an AsiaOne reader who was commuting on a Tower Transit bus on the highway.The reader passed by the accident site at around 12.50pm, just 10 minutes after seeing an ambulance drive past her bus on the PIE.Another AsiaOne reader also spotted several police vehicles and a Crime Scene Investigation van at the scene.A motorcycle could be seen lying on its side on the expressway, surrounded by traffic cones, in footage provided by the readers.AsiaOne is unable to independently verify how the accident occurred.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force said that they were alerted to a road traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a lorry along the PIE towards Changi Airport on Oct 1 at around 9.50am.The motorcyclist was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital unconscious, according to the police and SCDF.He subsequently died in hospital.

Air quality in Singapore remained in the moderate range on Thursday (Oct 1) as moderate to thundery showers fell over several parts of the island.At 6pm, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) ranged between 60 and 74, with central and eastern Singapore recording the highest reading of 74.Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 concentration readings remained in the normal band across all five regions.In its daily haze situation update on Thursday evening, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the country's 24-hour PSI forecast is expected to be in the moderate to low-unhealthy range.It added that moderate to dense smoke plumes were observed in southern Sumatra and Kalimantan, and that smoke haze from southern Kalimantan was seen drifting towards the vicinity of Singapore. Despite showers forecast for Singapore and the surrounding region, prevailing south-easterly or southerly winds could transport smoke haze towards the Republic, NEA said.
