'Cheeky' macaques play technician, remove component from Thomson lamp post

Two long-tailed macaques were caught with their tails up as they indulged in some "monkey business" along Old Upper Thomson Road recently.Sharing a video it received from a member of public, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) dubbed the "cheeky" monkeys its "unexpected maintenance crew".But what really happened, it said, was that the monkeys were removing a control node from a street lamp.According to LTA, the control node that is mounted on top of the street lamp, is part of its remote control and monitoring system that allows it to automatically detect faults and control streetlights.LTA said its system knew "something was up" after the node was removed, adding that this is not the first recorded instance of such an occurrence."So while our furry friends thought they were being sneaky, our system knew something was up. "This isn’t the first time curious wildlife has taken an interest in our streetlight equipment, especially near forests and nature reserves."

Can and bottle collectors ransack bins, leaving mess and attracting birds: 'Very unhygienic'

While the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) has encouraged more people to collect and return drink bottles and cans, concerns have emerged over some collectors rummaging through rubbish bins and leaving waste scattered in public areas.Since its launch in April, around 5.5 million bottles and cans have been recycled through the scheme, said Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and Environment Janil Puthucheary in Parliament on Aug 5. One such collector — a 53-year-old man who works near Amoy Street Food Centre — rides his bicycle around the area after work to collect empty cans and bottles, and had previously said he had received more than $1,000 from recycling them over two months.

Explosions heard before EV catches fire at Marine Parade car park; no injuries reported

An electric vehicle caught fire at a multi-storey car park in Marine Terrace on Thursday (Sept 24). Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at Block 16A Marine Terrace at about 11.55am.SCDF added that the fire involved the front compartment of an electric vehicle (EV) parked in a lot on the third floor.The fire was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet, and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.A video of the blaze shared by a Lianhe Zaobao reader shows flames engulfing the vehicle as SCDF vehicles arrived at the scene. Another video shows the charred vehicle after the fire was extinguished.When Lianhe Zaobao visited the location later that day, it was observed that the affected vehicle had been towed away, while the area around the parking lot remained cordoned off.Blackened marks were still visible on the walls near the parking space, while a burnt smell lingered at the scene.A male resident told Shin Min Daily News that he heard a series of explosions and saw a white car engulfed in flames.

Man to be charged over fire allegedly set outside mosque at UOB Plaza

A 50-year-old Chinese man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in causing a fire outside a mosque at Raffles Place. In a statement on Saturday (Sept 26), police said they were alerted to a fire at about 9pm on Sept 25 outside the mosque at 80 Raffles Place.Online checks indicate that the above-mentioned address corresponds to Masjid Moulana Mohamed Ali, an underground mosque located in the Central Business District. Preliminary investigations found that the man had allegedly placed an oil tin at the entrance of the mosque and set fire to a piece of undergarment inside the tin before leaving the scene.The fire was extinguished by a member of the public, and no injuries were reported.Through ground enquiries and with the aid of police cameras, officers from the central police division established the man's identity and arrested him within three hours of the report.A lighter was also seized as a case exhibit.The police said they have zero tolerance for acts that endanger the lives or safety of others and will not hesitate to act against those who blatantly disregard the law.

That prompted the couple to take a different approach instead.

"At around 2.30am, when I was planning to leave shortly, I noticed a commotion some distance away. People seemed to be standing around, so I thought maybe somebody got drunk," he said.Although Charlie said he did not pay much attention at first, he decided to act after being informed that the man had a heart condition and called for an ambulance."If he has a heart condition, we better do something urgent. Everyone was just standing around, not doing anything," he recalled.

Bump and steal: 5 Filipinos arrested for allegedly stealing over $155k from man in Orchard

A total of five Filipinos were arrested on Friday (Sept 25) for their alleged involvement in a case of theft.Police said in a news release on Saturday morning that the incident happened at about 1.40pm at the underpass near Tang Plaza in Orchard. According to the police, the male victim had just exchanged currency from a nearby money changer when he was bumped into by a few unknown persons at the foot of an escalator.The victim later discovered that his haversack had been unzipped and cash amounting to about $155,600 was missing.Officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identities of the quintet — a male Filipino national and four female Filipino nations, aged between 31 and 57 — through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from closed-circuit television (CCTV) and police cameras.They were arrested on the same day, and cash amounting to about $152,800 was recovered and seized as case exhibits. The five Filipino nationals will be charged in court on Saturday with the offence of theft with common intention.
