Singapore motorcyclist dies after collision with car in Malaysia

SINGAPORE — A 31-year-old Singaporean motorcyclist died on June 8 morning after a collision with a car in Malaysia, according to the country's news outlets. The man had been travelling in the direction of Johor Bahru at the 16km mark of the Second Link at about midnight, reported China Press. His Yamaha motorbike collided with a Proton Saga car that was making a U-turn, and the bike subsequently caught fire. The Singaporean died on the spot, according to Oriental Daily News. A 33-year-old male driver and a 40-year-old male passenger in the car were unhurt. In a Facebook post at 12.15am on June 8, Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said departure clearance at Tuas Checkpoint was on hold due to a traffic accident on the Second Link Bridge after the checkpoint. A video posted on the Singapore Roads Accident.com Facebook page shows a person lying in the middle of the road, with traffic coming to a standstill on two out of three lanes of the bridge.

Two days after a coffee shop cleaner cleared away his glass of beer, the man returned for 'revenge', brutally beating up the elderly employee. The assault occurred at around 9.20pm on Friday (June 7) at Block 101 Yuan Sheng Road in Taman Jurong, reported Shin Min Daily News. A staff at the coffee shop's beverage stall told the Chinese evening daily that the perpetrator is a frequent drinker who lives nearby. The staff, who is in his 20s, said the man had suddenly punched the elderly cleaner, causing the latter to fall to the ground and supposedly pass out. Subsequently, he dragged the defenceless cleaner about 10 metres away before continuing to kick and punch him in the face and stomach. The beverage stall staff said that he had tried to pull the drinker away from the victim but got pushed by the former. Another eyewitness surnamed Li added that many people had tried to break up the fight, but the man was very agitated and violent. After both men were separated, the cleaner was taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, the man was taken away by the police after questioning.

Seychelles to host 20 boxers for 5-nation boxing competition for Constitution Day

Seychelles will be hosting an international boxing competition on June 21 and 22 to celebrate the island nation's Constitution Day, which falls on June 18. Over 20 boxers from foreign countries will compete in the tournament at the NSC Hall, alongside well known Seychellois boxers, such as Keddy Agnes, Joshua Cousin and Shain Boniface. Five nations will be participating in the event featuring boxers from  Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion - a French overseas department - as well as Kenya and Sri Lanka. One of the organisers of the event, Roy Collie, said, «We had been in discussion with the Boxing Federation for a while now about having an international tournament, and with the Constitution Day coming up, we saw this as a perfect to have this tournament.»  He said the event has cost a lot to put together and the organisers are still looking for sponsors who will be able to help in getting cash prizes as rewards for the winners. «It's not enough just to give a boxer a medal, I mean they train very hard to compete and I think that a monetary reward is well deserved,» added Collie. Boxing tournaments with international boxers in Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, used to be held regularly in the past and boxers from the region were invited to participate. «We want to invite everyone to come down and enjoy the spectacle that we will be putting on. I am sure the boxers will be giving their all as they take the ring for their fights,» Collie added. Tickets for the competition will be SCR200 ($15), while there will be a VIP section, with the tickets costing SCR1,000 ($74).
