At the event held at national level at the Arebona entertainment center, the Chairman of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers, Mr. Tekeste Baire explaining the uniqueness of the observance of the day, indicated that the confederation is working by designing programs that corresponds with the new era and in congruent with national development endeavors. Indicating that without strong organization capacity there is no way forward; Mr. Tekeste said that strong effort will be exerted to strengthen organizational capacity of workers and especially that of youth workers. Mr. Tekeste went on to say that more focus will be given for strengthening the capacity of the economic sectors and boost productivity. Commending the role and commitment the Eritrean workers demonstrated in the past period of development and resilience, Mr. Woldeyesus Elisa, D. G. of Labor at the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, called for strengthening organizational capacity and participation in the implementation of the national development drives. Pointing out that the International Workers’ Day is a day in which the Eritrean workers renew their pledge for a better future, the statement issued by the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers called on the Eritrean workers to remember the challenges they had to go through in a bid to realize social and economic development and shoulder responsibility for boosting productivity and renew pledge to work with diligence and commitment. The event was featured by tree planting and other activities depicting the International Workers’ Day. The International Workers’ Day is being observed for the 129th time at international level and for the 28th time at national level.

Minister Semere Russom, Eritrea’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, met and held talks with Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Gedu Andargachew, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Minister Gedu underlined that the two countries will work for the strengthening of bilateral relations and enhancing the friendly ties of the peoples of the two countries. Commending the bold initiative the leaders of the two countries  took to normalize the relations between the two countries, Minister Semere expressed expectation that both countries enhance the positive momentum of cooperation and work to reinforce the mutual cooperation between the two countries. The meeting was attended by Mr. Habtom Zerai, First Secretary at the Eritrean Embassy, Ms. Hirut Zemene, Minister D’état at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia and the Director of the Office of the Ethiopian Foreign Minister.

Touring various social service rendering institutions in Agmayt, Harareb, Akaydeb and Hawa, Minister Woldemichael conducted a meeting with residents on the objective situation and expansion of healthcare services, education, potable water supply as well as transportation and communication services. At the meeting, the residents said that the difficulty of expanding services throughout the sub-zone a lot to bear and called on the Government to give special attention to sustainably ensuring the provision of basic services. Last week, the Minister of Local Government had conducted similar tour of inspection in the Northern red Sea region sub-zones of Afabet, Nakfa, Adobha and Qrora.

His Holiness Abune Lukas, General Secretary of the Eritrean Tewahdo Orthodox Church Synod, gave benediction in connection with Easter Holyday. Asmara, 27 April 2019 -  His Holiness Abune Lukas, General Secretary of the Eritrean Tewahdo Orthodox Church Synod, gave benediction in connection with Easter Holyday. The General Secretary of the Synod gave briefing on the background of the Holyday and wished Happy Easter to the Eritrean people living inside the country and abroad in general and the faithful in particular. He also called on the faithful to extend hand to the needy. Wishing for the success of the peace agreement reached between Eritrea and Ethiopia, His Holiness  Abune Lukas wished Easter to bring peace and prosperity as well as success to the national development programs.

The Southern Red Sea region organized a workshop on 24 and 25 April in the port city of Assab focusing on conservation cultural heritage. The workshop was conducted under the theme “Our Traditional Culture: Foundation of Our Identity and Existence”. At the workshop in which the Commander of the Eritrean Navy and Eastern Command, Maj. Gen. Humed Mohammed Karikare and the Governor of the Southern Red Sea region, Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai took part research papers were presented focusing of the tangible and intangible heritage in the region. Indicating that the workshop is aimed at conducting research on the untapped cultural tradition and heritage and transfer it to the young generation, Ms. Hawa Mohammed, D. G. of Culture and Sports in the region, called for integrated effort on the part of the public and concerned institutions. Ms. Hawa also called for supporting with research the existing exemplary tradition of the society in the conservation of trees and wild animals as well as controlling pollution and inclusion in the educational programs. Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai on his part said that the transferring of the Eritrean noble values and identity to the young generation is the responsibility of every citizen and that the regional administration will contribute due part in the effort. The participants also conducted extensive discussion of the research papers presented and adopted various recommendations.

Asmara, 25 April 2019 - World Malaria Day observed in the Central region in Serejaka today, 25 April under the theme “Zero malaria starts with me” to raise awareness for the treatment and prevention of the disease. Speaking at the event, Mr. Meles Gebreyesus, head of Malaria Prevention branch in the Ministry of Health pointing out that the Central region has been considered as Malaria-endemic region since 1998 and said that thanks to the effort conducted since the prevalence of the diseases has decreased to 0.4%. Indicating that 35 countries including Eritrea are working to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on ending malaria, Mr. Meles called on stakeholders to reinforce effort to achieve the desired goal. Further pointing out that in addition to health problems, malaria causes major economic damage, Mr. Meles indicated that Eritrea is steadfastly working to eliminate malaria and called on everyone to play due part in the effort by following every advice given by the Ministry of Health. Underlining the economic and health challenges malaria causes, Mr. Kiflemariam Gebremeskel, administrator of Serejaka sub zone on his part indicated that by charting out big programs the Ministry of Health is working to end malaria for good. According to WHO, in 2013 over 198 million people were infected with malaria worldwide and that 584 thousand of them died of which 78% were children. WHO also indicated that 90% of the deaths occurred in sub Saharan countries.

Upon arrival at the Asmara International Airport, President Mohammed Abdullahi was accorded warm welcome by President Isaias Afwerki, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Osman Saleh and other high level Eritrean officials. In their meeting at State House today, President Isaias and President Mohammed discussed on reinforcing bilateral relations as well as on regional and international issues of mutual interest. The two presidents also discussed on the status and progress of Eritrea-Somalia ties of cooperation and partnership as well as vital matters pertaining to Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. President Mohammed was accompanied by the Minister of Education, Mr. Abdulahi Godax Bare and other senior Somali officials. President Mohamed subsequently departed to Mogadishu in mid afternoon hours of today.

The 15th YPFDJ –Europe Conference that was underway from 19 to 22 April in London under the theme “Nation Building in the Era of Peace and Development” concluded. Asmara, 23 April 2019- The 15th YPFDJ –Europe Conference that was underway from 19 to 22 April in London under the theme “Nation Building in the Era of Peace and Development” concluded. At the conference that was attended by Eritrean Ambassadors and diplomats as well as about 700 youth representatives from Europe and America briefings on investment opportunities in Eritrea, progress of Potash mining and other relevant issues were presented by experts engaged in the fields. Let. Col. Getachew Merhatsion, head of Cartography and Information Center, also gave briefing on long and short term strategic programs and future prospect. Mr. Yemane Gebreab, head of PFDJ Political Affairs, on his part said that the new era demands synchronizing the national development programs inside the country with the initiatives by nationals in the Diaspora. Mr. Yemane also called for strengthening organizational capacity of PFDJ organizations, communities and national organizations and to reinforce contribution in the implementation of the national development drives. Seminar was also organized to children representatives from various countries focusing on national identity, history, culture and values of the Eritrean people.

This will remain true irrespective of the turns and twists of history or changing circumstances.  In the event, the attention that must be accorded to safeguard the security of the Red Sea must be high and fully consonant with its paramount importance.Dear Participants,As we all agree, this important maritime route had sadly become a theatre for reckless regional and international interferences in the past thirty years largely due to misguided exogenous agendas.  This somber state of affairs in turn entailed a perplexing reality of stampede and unnecessary complications.  This was in addition to the legacy of the Cold War.It must be noted here that the interferences that stem from regional and international agendas could not have materialized without the complicity and connivance of local players.  In this perspective, the whole affair warrants a sober and comprehensive review that is not dented by emotional or presumptive approaches.In these times, the proliferation of institutions is increasingly becoming the norm all over the world.  This is also true in our region.  The various initiatives usually emanate from a reservoir of political goodwill.  Indeed, they are launched to advance lofty objectives.  Unfortunately, the institutions that stay the course, gain traction and consolidation over time to deliver the desired results are few. By the same token, initiatives undertaken in the past years to foster appropriate institutional frameworks and ties of cooperation in the Red Sea, or to launch conferences for submission of research papers, have been considerable indeed.  Here again, those that have produced impacting results are few. The formulation of a viable framework of cooperation and attendant functional institution on the basis of consensus and mutual understanding will therefore require a patient and methodological approach.  Continuous and serious consultations will thus remain a matter of necessity rather than choice.In our modest view, the requisite consultations should incorporate the following cardinal procedural and substantive issues.  They must also be conducted in a manner that will avoid wastage of time or opportunity loss.  The key parameters are:1.    Comprehensive and unbiased assessment of the current realities of the Red Sea and associated matters, in all their dimensions and perspectives in a realistic manner; 2.    Full clarity on the desired objectives and goals; 3.    Detailed mapping of the threats to the peace and security of the Red Sea; and, categorization and specification of these parameters; 4.    Formulation of a viable strategy that will ensure achievement of constructive objectives and goals; 5.    Formulation of strategies to contain and eliminate the threats in tandem with the positive policies of cooperation; 6.    Mapping out detailed schemes and plans that will ensure holistic implementation of the twin strategies; 7.    Stipulation of the implementation mechanisms, associated structures and mobilization of the requisite resources; 8.     Ensuring that all the organizational configurations and frameworks that are developed are anchored on respect of sovereignty and international law; 9.    Ensuring that all littoral States build and possess their own effective defense capabilities and naval forces (without delegation to others); 10.     Supplementing, through collective efforts and synergy, those specific tasks that cannot be met through individual domestic capabilities and resources; 11.     All relevant States will create appropriate modalities of cooperation with “external forces” for tasks or missions that are beyond their collective capability on the basis of a consensual framework; 12.      Creation of competent committees to address all these issues in a comprehensive and professional manner.Dear Participants,Let me conclude by expressing our sincere hope that the modest views we have outlined above will enrich the deliberations of this Conference.I thank you

Massawa, 20 April 2019 - The Minister of Local Government, Mr. Woldemicael Abraha, accompanied by the Governor of Northern Red Sea Region, Brig. Gen. Tekle Libsu conducted a tour of inspection from 15 to 19 April to various development sites in the sub zones of Afabet, Nakfa, Adobha, and Kiroraon. Minister Woldemicael was provided extensive briefing by the concerned experts on the development projects being conducted in the Northern Red Sea region including potable water projects, educational and health institutions, as well as other social service rendering institutions as well as water and soil conservation activities. Minister Woldemicael also conducted discussion with administrators, representatives of the public and other concerned institutions on the problems and constraints the sub zones are encountering and on the possible solutions. He also expressed the Ministry's readiness to support the sub zones in all their endeavors. Asmara, 19 April 2019- The 15th YPFDJ –Europe Conference convened today, 19 April in London under the theme “Nation Building in the Era of Peace and Development”. The Conference was officially opened by Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Head of PFDJ Political Affairs. The four day conference is being attended by Eritrean Ambassadors and diplomats as well as about 700 youth representatives from Europe and America. Indicating that the prevailing peace is the result of strong resilience of the Eritrean people and its leadership, Ms. Rahel Seyum, Chairperson of the YPFDJ-Europe, called for transferring the noble values to generations. Pointing out that the conference is being held at the time in which the Eritrean people emerged victorious against external conspiracies targeting the Eritrean sovereignty, Mr. Estifanos Habtemariam, Eritrean Ambassador to the UK and Northern Ireland,  called for strengthening organizational capacity and contribution in the national development drives. The Chairman of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students, Mr. Saleh Ahmedin on his part called for active participation of the youth in the nation building process. In his keynote speech, Mr. Yemane Gebreab, indicating that the conspiracies to reverse the independence and sovereignty of Eritrea have been foiled for the second time, underlined that the era of peace demands for channeling all resources for the development of the country. At the meeting, the participants ratified a guiding principle on the rights and obligations of members and Mr. Zeru Woldemicael, Manager of National Insurance Corporation, gave briefing on the policy and other issues related to insurance.

The World Health Day was observed at national level today, 17 April here in the capital, Asmara, under the theme “Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere”. Asmara, 17 April 2019- The World Health Day was observed at national level today, 17 April here in the capital, Asmara, under the theme “Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere”. At the ceremony held at the Orotta National Referral Hospital, Dr. Andebrhan Tesfatsion, Acting D. G. of Public Health at the Ministry of Health said that the World Health Day is one of the eight days being observed in relation to health issues and that universal health coverage is the basic goal of the World Health Organization. Dr. Andebrhan noted that the Government of Eritrea alongside the sustainable goals is working to ensure the provision of health services to citizens by designing strategic health policy. Dr. Ibrahim Sambuli, UNFPA Representative in Eritrea, indicated that half of the world population do not receive basic health services, millions of pregnant women do not receive health service during delivery and millions of children die due to lack of vaccination and that countries are working to ensure universal health coverage until 2030 as well as realizing the Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Ibrahim also expressed expectation that Eritrea will achieve the Sustainable Development Goals ahead of 2030. Indicating that the World Health Day is dedicated for the progress of the health sector worldwide, Mr. Pierre Ngom, UNICEF Representative in Eritrea, explained that Eritrea is on the right track in achieving the universal health coverage and in immunization program especially to that of children. The World Health Day is being observed for the 71st time at international level and for the 21st time at national level.

The report was made at an activity assessment meeting conducted on 11 and 12 April in Mendefera city. At the meeting in which representatives from administrations, Ministry of Education, regional assembly, PFDJ and national associations attended, Mr. Belay Nurhussien, head of Adult Education Supervision stated that from 2014-2018 over 20 thousand or 76% of those enrolled have successfully concluded their education. Pointing out that illiteracy rate is declining in the Southern region Mr. Belay said that nomadic lifestyle and other reasons are impeding several nationals from attending school and called for integrated effort on the part of Government and Front bodies. Mr. Belay also called on the public to take advantage of the 22 community libraries put in place throughout the region and tackle the resurgence of illiteracy. Participants on their part discussed on the effective implementation of illiteracy eradication programs, on the role and integration effort of government bodies in the program, on the significance of community libraries as well as the challenges encountered and possible solutions among others. Speaking at the event, Mr. Gebrezgi Demam, D.G. of Adult Education and Media in the Ministry of Education, pointing out that illiteracy is the cause of poverty and underdevelopment, indicated that owing to the huge investment theGovernment has made in eradicating illiteracy encouraging results are being registered and called for increased effort to that end. Mr. Efrem Gebrekiristos, Governor of the Southern region, on his part expressed the administrations readiness to play its part in creating educational opportunities to all citizens.

The call was made at a meeting conducted with members of NUEW branch in Assab region. Ms. Teke’a further reminded members to take advantage of the educational and vocational training opportunities created for them and upgrade their skills and knowledge and thereby increase their contribution in the development programs. Pointing out that economic and educational support provided to women by the NUEW and partners emanates from recognition of the role of women in the society; Ms. Teke’a called on the public to exert effort to nurture children with the noble societal values and culture. Reminding participants that the prevailing era of peace calls for extra effort and perseverance, Ms. Tekea, called on women to play due role in the implementation of the set out national development programs. Asmara, 13 April 2019 - The Eritrean Chemical Society conducted its 10th Congress yesterday, 12 April under the theme “Developing Chemical Science for National Development” at the Hall of Chamber of Commerce, here in the capital.Speaking at the event, Mr. Daniel Zemicael, President of the Society, pointed out that the objectives of the society include among others developing chemical science and related fields, expanding chemical education, upgrading the skills of members. Mr. Daniel further indicated that the society is working to enhance organization capacity and helping members to increase contribution in the development of industries. Mr. Petros Hailemariam, D.G of Human Resources Development at the Ministry of Education, on his part expressed the Ministries readiness to support in realizing the objectives of the Eritrean Chemical Society. At the Congress, several research papers were presented on electronic waste and disposal mechanisms, the types of honey in local market, plastic materials, papers, and paints among others. An exhibition of various products made in Eritrea was also on display at the venue of the Congress. The Eritrean Chemical Society was established in 1993 and comprise over 150 members.

The head of the Rehabilitation Program of the association, Mr. Andemariam Gebrekrstos said that the Government has disbursed over 189 Million Nakfa in support of war disabled veterans. The association has also received about 89 million Nakfa in contribution from the public inside the country and from branch associations in the Diaspora, Mr. Andemariam added. Mr. Tesfaldet Mengistu, head of the association in the Southern region, on his part said that the association has provided over 37 million Nakfa loan to members to enable them engaged in income generating schemes and many of them have become successful. Participants of the meeting commending the support the association is making to improve the livelihoods of members expressed readiness to reinforce contribution.

Mendefera, 02 April 2019 – The Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute organized two week training on the development of select types of vegetables and fruits, report indicates. The training was attended by 35 agricultural experts from six agricultural research centers from Golij, Shambiqo, Akordat, Shieb, Gahtelay, Hagaz and Halhale. According to Mr. Medhanie Mehari, researcher at the Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute, the training was aimed at upgrading the capacity of the experts on proper utilization of agro-technology in preservation and cross breeding of select vegetable and fruit seeds and enhancing productivity. The trainees on their part, pointed out that the training will have significant contribution in upgrading their skill, in the development of modern vegetables and fruits farming and in increasing productivity.

Col. Berhane Bokretsion said that ‘Autism’ is a complicated disability hard to identify and monitor even at a national level. He also pointed out that the Association in cooperation with the Ministry of Health has come to agreement to establish Beth-Meka’e Community Hospital as a center for patients with Autism and Down Syndrome, in addition to the health services it provides. Indicating that the awareness of the public on Autism is encouraging, Let. Col. Berhane called for the enhanced support to victims by families, community and other concerned bodies.Commending the initiative parents are undertaking, Dr. Andeberhan Tesfatsion, Acting Director General of Public Health in the Ministry of Health, on his part expressed the Ministry’s readiness to support the activities of the National Association of Autism and Down Syndrome.According to the World Health Organization, one out of 160 children are born with Autism, and as of yet the causes and treatment of Autism are unknown.

According to Mr. Mihretu Araya, head of Agriculture office in the sub zone, residents of Areza sub zone in cooperation with the Ministry of Education branch are involved in the construction of 148 hectares of terraces and 886 hectares of water diversion schemes. Mr. Mebrahtu went on to say that the construction of the water diversion schemes has witnessed commendable involvement of the residents of the administrative areas of Adi-Kemesho, Adi Gulti and Adi Belsey and called for strong participation of the public in water and soil conservation activities in their areas.
