'Disappointed': Passenger accuses cabby of taking longer route and charging double for ride to Changi Airport

She paid the price for convenience and comfort - but she wasn't expecting that amount to be doubled. A passenger claims she travelled from a hotel at Novena to Changi Airport Terminal 3 by taxi, but covered double the distance and paid twice the amount for her ride, according to her post on Facebook on Friday (July 26). The passenger, Ennie Huynh, said she took a ComfortDelGro cab on Thursday morning, headed for the airport. «I checked with the hotel, the journey is around 17.6km (via PIE) or 21.6km (via ECP),» she wrote. However, the cab she boarded drove her 39.2km over a 40-minute drive. A quick search on Google Maps shows that the trip should indeed be around 20km depending on the route, taking about 20 minutes. «He charged me $37.75, almost double the time and amount that my other family member who took the same journey [paid],» Huynh said, also later adding in comments that her group had a total of eight people and had to hire two taxis to ferry them all. A photograph of the receipt shows that the meter fare was $34.75, while the booking fee was $2.30 and the platform fee was $0.70.

A man was allegedly stabbed to death in a Yishun flat on Saturday (July 27) morning. The incident occurred in a 10th floor unit at Block 803 Yishun Ring Road at around 8am, according to Chinese publication Lianhe Zaobao. Residents said they had heard two men arguing prior to the incident. One of them allegedly stabbed the other with a sharp object. Police officers cordoned off the scene and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department were seen collecting evidence inside and outside the flat. A neighbour, who declined to be named, told 8world the deceased was an intellectually disabled 34-year-old who originally lived with his aunt. His aunt's brother, who is in his 50s, allegedly took over his care recently. The neighbour, who said he grew up with the deceased, claimed the latter had told him on Thursday that he was facing some family issues and felt pressured as he was being bullied at home. «He previously told me that his aunt's brother borrowed money from him,» said the neighbour, who added that both men were unemployed. AsiaOne has contacted the police for more information.

2 Seychelles' football clubs will go to preliminary rounds of 2 CAF competitions

Two Seychelles' football clubs, St. Louis and Foresters, will participate in the preliminary round of two competitions of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Champions League and Confederation's Cup, respectively. St. Louis football club, the Seychelles Premier League title holder, will compete in the Champions League with the continent league winners. The Seychelles' side has been drawn against Grupo Desportivo Sagrada Esperança (GDSE) from Angola.   GDSE finished as runner-up in the Angolan first division last season but has won the league title twice in its history. Should St.Louis get past their opponents, they will meet the winners of the match between US Zilimadjou of Comoros and Enugu Rangers of Nigeria. Zilimadjou are the Comoros League Champions, a title they have now won for the fifth time, while Rangers are the champions of Nigeria. Rangers have won the Nigerian Premier League eight times in its history and are one of the nation's top teams. Until now no club from Seychelles has ever made it to the group stage of the CAF Champions League. St.Michel came close in 2001 when they reached the final qualifying round, but lost 6-0 on aggregate to eventual winners and record champions Al Ahly of Egypt. Meanwhile, Foresters will face Orapa United of Botswana in the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation's Cup. Orapa United FC plays in Botswana Premier League after being promoted from the country's First Division North League in the 2013–14 season. The side qualified for the Confederations Cup after losing in the country's Football Association (DA) Cup to League champions Jwaneng Galaxy. The winner of this encounter will face Dynamos of Zimbabwe or Zesco United from Zambia in the next round. Dynamos are 21 times champions of Zambia, making them its most successful club. Zesco United have won the Zambia league nine times in their history. The CAF Confederation Cup was established in 2004 from a merger of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners' Cup and organized by CAF. It is the second-tier competition of African club football, ranking below the CAF Champions League. The winner of the tournament faces the winner of the aforementioned competition in the following season's CAF Super Cup.

Livable or not? Video of bomb shelter 'bedroom' draws public concern

Are these conditions livable?  A video of a loft bed installed inside a condo unit's bomb shelter has recently surfaced on Reddit (July 24), sparking a discussion among netizens if it was ethical for the space to be used as a bedroom.  From the video, an additional slider door had been installed in the bomb shelter. To accommodate the loft bed, a flight of steps were also built inside the space. According to the video's description, the bomb shelter was converted into a bedroom for the home owner's maid.  The post quickly garnered a flurry of comments from netizens concerned about the amount of ventilation in the small space.  «No windows, no ventilation, no phone reception. How would maids know if there's war? She won't even know if it's day or night,» said one netizen.  Others also mentioned that it was illegal to remove the bomb shelter door.  https://www.tiktok.com/@anniewang91/video/7393320142479822087 A quick check by AsiaOne showed that the video was originally uploaded on TikTok by Annie Wang, who runs a company that builds customised loft beds.

SAF's existence and preparedness crucial to Singapore's safety in the last 60 years: SM Lee

The existence and preparedness of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is one of the main reasons why the country has enjoyed peace and stability for the last 60 years, said Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.  Although the SAF has never had to fight a war to defend Singapore, this may not always be the case, said Lee, who was speaking at the SAF Day dinner at the Safti Military Institute on Friday (July 26).  «While we hope for the best, we must prepare for the worst,» he said.  The price of peace, however, is eternal vigilance, said Lee — where SAF servicemen are on guard every day, in the air, on land, at sea, and even in the digital domain.  «During these decades, whenever we have needed the SAF, it has always delivered.»  The annual SAF Dinner is held to recognise the dedication, commitment and contributions of Singapore's service personnel in maintaining the nation's peace and security.  At the event this year, Lee – who graced the event as the Guest of Honour – was recognised for his support and contributions to both the progress of the SAF and Singapore.
