Race to rescue animals as Brazilian wetlands burn

Wildlife guide Eduarda Fernandes steers a speedboat up the Piquiri river in western Brazil, scanning the horizon for jaguars wounded in the wildfires ripping through the Pantanal, the world's biggest tropical wetlands. Fernandes, 20, is part of a team of volunteers working to find and rescue jaguars wounded by the record-breaking blazes, which have burned through nearly 12 percent of the Pantanal. «Our goal is to reduce the impact of the fires as much as we can, by leaving food and water for the animals and rescuing the wounded ones,» she said. The state park where she and her team are working, Encontro das Aguas, is known for having the largest jaguar population on Earth. In normal times, it is home to at least 150 jaguars, a species classified as «near threatened» by the International Union for Conservation of Nature because of its declining numbers. But now the fires have burned through 85 percent of the 109,000-hectare (270,000-acre) park, and many of the jaguars have disappeared. No one knows if they are dead, wounded or have fled elsewhere. - Jaguar trapping 101 - After a two hours searching by boat, the team finds a male jaguar resting on the river bank beneath a tree hanging with vines, his spots standing out against a pile of leaves left dry by the region's worst drought in decades. They photograph it and evaluate from afar: the jaguar has an injured front paw that may need treatment. Capturing a jaguar is no small feat. It takes tranquilizer darts, at least three boats and a lot of force. The tranquilizer takes about 10 minutes to kick in, and during that lapse jaguars have been known to try to swim away. They are excellent swimmers, but risk drowning when the drug takes effect. «Everything can go wrong,» said veterinarian Jorge Salomao of the charity Ampara Animal (Animal Support). As the team assesses the situation, sweating in the hot sun and surrounded by semi-scorched vegetation, the jaguar gets up to drink from the river. That gives the veterinarians a chance to make a more precise diagnosis: he is walking gingerly, but does not appear to be in acute pain. «He can probably recover on his own. Better to stand down» from capturing him, said Salomao. He will return in a few days to see how the big cat is doing. - Animal rescue specialists - Another team is in a four-by-four traveling the dusty highway across the Pantanal, the Transpantaneira, setting out water and food for animals whose habitats have been destroyed in the fires. These volunteers are from the Disaster Rescue Group for Animals (GRAD), which specializes in helping animals hit by man-made or natural disasters. «The fires are a huge problem in and of themselves, but after that, the animals are left facing hunger and thirst,» said veterinary student Enderson Barreto, 22, using thick gloves and shin guards to protect himself from being bitten by one of the region's many poisonous snakes. Veterinarian Luciana Guimaraes is holding a small howler monkey that was hit by a car on the road. «That's going to be happening a lot, because they approach the road looking for food and water,» said the 41-year-old wildlife specialist. Having traveled from Sao Paulo to volunteer here, she is trying to hold onto hope. «Nature has a great capacity for recovery, even in a situation like this, where everything seems to have burned,» she said. «But it can take a very long time.» © Agence France-Presse

75 National Assembly candidates qualify for ballot in Seychelles' October election

Seventy-three candidates from four political parties and two independents will contest Seychelles' legislative elections in October after receiving their certificates from the Seychelles Electoral Commission on Friday night. The Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) and the United Seychelles (US) parties will have candidates in all the twenty-six electoral districts on the three main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue. The fourth party – Lalyans Seselwa – presented four candidates; three nominations were accepted and one did not qualify. The legislative elections will be held alongside the presidential elections in Seychelles – 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean — from October 22-24. Either it is not enough signatures as we had asked or it is problem with the ID itself. So, it is more or less the same problem,» explained Amesbury. In a statement to the press at the end of the nomination day, the chief electoral officer, Manuella Amesbury, said that all disqualifications had to do with an incomplete list of supporters and issues with the supporters' identification. The leader of One Seychelles – Alain St Ange – said he was disappointed with the electoral commission as he – as party leader - was not informed of the disqualification before the certification presentation. St Ange said that he could not understand the logic behind one of the two disqualifications. "I have sat with one representative this afternoon to see the objection being lodged by a party which likes to object and it was absolutely not founded and I want to absolutely sit with the chief electoral officer before I make a formal declaration on this,' said St Ange. He added that the regulations set up by the commission were not being respected and that the rule of law should be observed. The two independent candidates who submitted their nomination documents, Holbert Jean and Keith Andre,  also received their nomination certificates. The two independent candidates, Jean (top) and Andre will be contesting the election in their respective districts. (Joe Laurence, Seychelles News Agency)  Photo License: CC-BY  The disqualification of the Lalyans Seselwa candidate for the National Assembly election is the second blow for the party this week. On Wednesday the candidacy of leader Patrick Pillay for the presidential race was rejected because it did not meet all the legal requirements. Pillay's running mate Weston Wirtz is now contesting in the legislative elections and he is amongst the three candidates who have qualified for the legislative elections. Leader and representative of the two main parties contesting this election LDS and US – who spoke on Friday - both called for a process that is free and fair. Roger Mancienne and Simon Gill stressed the importance that the elections are held peacefully with respect and tolerance for each other's affiliations.

SINGAPORE - There were 15 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Saturday noon (Sept 19), taking Singapore's total to 57,558. They included one community case, who is a Singaporean, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Saturday. There were also five imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notices upon arrival in Singapore. More details will be announced on Saturday night. On Friday, there were 11 new coronavirus cases confirmed - the lowest daily figure in over six months since March 12, when there were nine cases. The sole new case in the community reported on Friday is currently unlinked. He is a 30-year-old Singaporean man who was confirmed positive on Thursday, said MOH. There was also one new imported case - a work permit holder who returned from India on Sept 6. She had been placed on stay-home notice upon arrival in Singapore and was tested while serving her notice. A Giant outlet at Sunshine Place in Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 and the State Courts were added to the places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infectious, MOH said on Friday.

Man who was jailed 2 extra days by mistake signs compensation agreement, describes experience behind bars

SINGAPORE - The man who was kept behind bars for two extra days because of an administrative error in the State Courts said he had tried to distract himself to avoid thinking about the extra hours he was spending in jail. For those two nights, he had tossed and turned in the jail cell that he shared with three others, Mr Teo Seng Tiong told The Straits Times on Saturday (Sept 19). On some nights of the fish farmer's seven week imprisonment term, he said he was kept awake by the incessant whirr of the ventilator fan and the sound his cellmates made as they showered. But between Aug 22 and 23, it was the fact that he should have been a free man that weighed heavily on the 59-year-old's mind. «During the day, I could distract myself by talking to other people but at night, when no one else was awake, I kept thinking about it,» said Mr Teo in Mandarin. «You keep telling yourself not to and try to sleep, but you can't stop thinking about it... It was like time wasn't moving.»
